What the heck is a personal development coach?

There are a lot of different types of coaches, each with the goal to help their clients excel in some way.  Most of us are familiar with sports coaches who help athletes develop superior performance and skills to achieve excellence at their sport. Then what is a personal growth coach or personal development coach?

Isn’t it equally important, if not more important, to achieve excellence in all aspects of your life?

Joan Jakel is a personal development coach

The simple answer is personal development coaching focuses on personal growth and self-improvement

A personal development coach works with clients to help people:

  • access their personal power
  • overcome obstacles,
  • create an empowered mindset,
  • eliminate limiting beliefs,
  • become more self-aware,
  • navigate adversity and challenges,
  • master emotions
  • improve relationship management
  • develop confidence
  • learn how to take radical responsibility for their lives.

Personal development coaches thrive on helping clients unleash their potential, teach them tools to go after what they want in life and GET IT.

THE COACHING PROCESS

Coaching is a collaborative process between the coach and the client.  To achieve real, lasting results, the client must be wholeheartedly committed and willing to fully engage in the coaching process. Coaches offer support, guidance, and accountability for clients to reach their goals.

A personal development coach will often use different tools and techniques to help their clients create a personalized action plan. They may use exercises such as journaling, visualization, goal-setting, or specific challenges designed to push clients outside of their comfort zone.

A masterful coach will create a safe, supportive, non-judgmental environment to encourage the client to explore life with honesty and introspection. Real results require the ability to be vulnerable and explore uncomfortable places.

Coaches often see the potential in their clients before they can see it for themselves.  However, don’t expect your coach to give you the answers even when they have them.  What makes great coaches so effective is their ability to expertly guide clients through the self-discovery process.

Coaches also serve as a sounding board for clients to explore their thoughts and feelings in a non-judgmental environment. They help identify limiting beliefs or negative self-talk that may be holding the client back from reaching their full potential.

Coaches ask a lot of questions designed to lead clients to discover the answers on their own.  Let’s be real – no one likes to be told what to do.  However, when you discover the solution to life’s questions and challenges on your own, then you have real buy in. You revel in a sense of accomplishment and desire to implement, which solidifies and internalizes the results for lasting impact.

It’s human nature to focus on life’s problems and challenges which results in feeling stuck without a solution.  Personal development coaches recognize that what we focus on expands, so the last thing we want to do is focus on the problem! A coach employs a more results-oriented form of problem solving. Coaches help clients shift the focus onto the solution and desired outcomes which leads to real action and desirable results

A key benefit of working with a personal development coach is receiving accountability and direct feedback to move in the direction of the desired outcomes. Coaches provide timely course corrections to keep you on target to achieve your goals more quickly.

The duration of coaching typically varies depending on the individual’s needs and goals. Some people may only need a few sessions, while others may benefit from ongoing coaching support over several months or even years. The key is to find a coach that resonates with you and fits your specific needs.

Coaches come to the relationship with active listening skills and highly effective tools and resources specifically tailored to help each client achieve their desired outcome. They are specialized in helping clients achieve success and overcome obstacles quickly, efficiently, and effectively. Great coaches help people achieve what they often believe is unachievable.

WHO CAN BENEFIT FROM PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT COACHING?

Personal development, mindset, or empowerment coaching is a valuable resource for individuals seeking self-improvement and growth. This includes men and women entrepreneurs looking to enhance their leadership skills, CEOs aiming to refine their strategic thinking, leaders at all levels aspiring to boost their communication and teamwork abilities, or artists desiring to unlock their creative potential

The bottom line is personal development coaching helps individuals become the best version of themselves. It empowers them to break through limitations and achieve their goals in all areas of life.

HOW TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT COACH

Finding the right personal development coach is like finding a best friend who wants to see you succeed in life. It’s essential to choose someone that you feel comfortable with and who understands your goals, values, and beliefs.

Here are some tips for choosing the right personal development coach:

  • Do your research – Ask your friends and colleagues for recommendations. Follow a few coaches on social media to get a taste of their style and see if you align.
  • Schedule a consultation – Most coaches offer a free initial consultation, either in-person or over the phone. This opportunity gives you the chance to see if there is a good fit between you and the coach.
  • Clarify your goals – Before meeting with a potential coach, take some time to think about what you want to achieve through coaching. This will help you determine if the coach’s approach aligns with your needs.
  • Trust your intuition – The relationship between the coach and client is crucial for success. If you don’t feel a connection or trust with a potential coach, it’s best to keep looking until you find the right fit.

THE JOAN JAKEL COACHING PROCESS

Life Coach Joan JakelSo now that you have a general understanding of coaches, let me share my unique brand of personal development coaching.

As a personal development coach and empowerment instigator, I help you get crystal clear on your vision of life – the life that rocks your world and excites you to jump out of bed in the morning ready to take on your day.

With your vision in hand, we collaborate to create an actionable plan.  An action plan that can turn your deeply held dreams and specific goals into reality when you commit to taking action.

I teach, guide and coach you to:

    • upgrade your mindset
    • eliminate fear
    • develop confidence and courage
    • put an end to resistance
    • eliminate the nagging, critical inner dialogue
    • access your inner wisdom
    • develop empowering, supportive beliefs
    • define your values
    • create SMART goals
    • determine priorities
    • build communication skills
    • set healthy boundaries
    • implement your vision
    • live a more fulfilling life.

I provide the tools, resources, structure, support, personal guidance and accountability to achieve your desired outcome.  And I do it from the perspective of seeing you as already having achieved your vision – I see you as the person you desire to be, and I hold you in the space of knowing what is possible.

You will learn how to take radical responsibility for your life and quit giving away your power to anyone else.

YOU become the cause of your life rather than being subject to the effect of people, situations, societal views or outdated rules – rules that never applied to you in the first place!

The reality is that you cannot create a new desired outcome by doing the same things you’ve always done – you have to learn to do things that you’ve never done to get results you’ve never (yet) obtained.

If your current life does not support your desired vision of your life, or you haven’t yet figured out your vision, then change, and the willingness to get uncomfortable as you navigate it, are necessary components leading to success.  This kind of change requires seasoned guidance to help you navigate the discomfort and fear of letting go of what is to embrace all that can be.

Given my business and legal background, most of my coaching clients are entrepreneurs. While I ask a lot of questions during coaching sessions, when it comes to business, I also pepper in advice and guidance often found in more traditional advising roles.

coffee, candles, flowers and notepadThrough the entire coaching process, I provide a nourishing, safe and supportive environment.  All coaching is provided in a judgement-free zone

I am gentle to encourage introspection, yet strong to not let you off the hook when the going gets tough.

I’m direct, yet always deliver with your highest good guiding the way.

My well-tuned intuition guides the process to deliver what is most needed in the moment.

If you feel the tingling of excitement and just a bit of fear, you know you’re at the right place at the right time. You are ready to take your life to the next level and breathe life into your vision.
