We’re officially kicking off the summer season with today’s Solstice!  Today is a great day to connect with nature – take a walk outside, get your hands in dirt and plant something special, enjoy the moon rising, or go to a farmer’s market – which was one of my delights today at the mid-week market!

The Summer Solstice is also a perfect time to reflect on inner growth and to re-commit to living with intention. 

Much of the personal development work I do with clients, and with myself, is taking an honest look at the impact conditioning has had on our experience of life.  

We all navigate layers of conditioning that have been built up over our lifetime by family, teachers, environment, society, school, religion, social media, to name a few.

Over the years, these layers build up much like an artichoke:  tough, sharp-pointed exterior layer upon layer, often with very little substance, that provide a tight barrier around the tender, coveted inside – the heart.

While the layers of conditioning may have been formed with good intentions to protect us, they can disconnect us from ourselves if we are trying to force ourselves to live by rules and paradigms that no longer align with our evolving inner truth.


Part of our important life work is to get off automatic pilot and start examining our thoughts and beliefs to make sure they still support us.  It’s important to weed out and eliminate outdated conditioning that no longer serves us.

Equally important is tapping into our inner wisdom and heart energy to create and align new structures and better beliefs with an empowered mindset to design life on our terms.

If you no longer feel supported or you feel stuck living according to other people’s rules, outdated rules or an antiquated belief system, that’s a nudge from your inner wisdom to take a closer look.  Be brave and peel back the layers and toss out what no longer serves you.

After you uncover and release the old conditioning, take some time to reflect and journal on the following:

  • What is more true to me right now?
  • What do I know to be true when I look with an honest eye and an open heart?
  • How do I want to experience life right now and moving forward?
  • How can I create a new set of rules on my terms that fully support me?

Making meaningful shifts in conditioning requires commitment, persistence and practice.  Some of our old conditioning has been around for a long time and doesn’t willingly leave on the first attempt. Be tenacious.
