I was recently looking through some of my resources for a client related to belief systems and mindset. Of course, the universe took the lead and responded by reminding me of a book I’ve had for years – The Magic of Thinking Big by David J Schwartz, Ph.D. (This is a non-affiliate link.)
The book is very easy to read and it provides information, tools and practical exercises to help you develop a success mindset, which is the foundation for accomplishing your goals (more on world class goal setting can be savored in this blog post!).
According to Schwartz, “Where success is concerned, people are not measured in inches or pounds, or college degrees or family background; they are measured by the size of their thinking. How big we think determines the size of our accomplishments.”
After the crazy last couple of years, there is a calling to reach higher, think bigger and accomplish more meaning in life.
Here are some tips from the book that you can immediately implement:
Believe it can be done. It all starts with our beliefs. When you believe something can be done, your mind will find the ways to do it. Believing paves the way to a solution. Remember Ford’s wise words, “If you believe you can or you can’t, you’re right.”
Eliminate words that hold you back, such as “impossible,” “won’t work,” “can’t do,” or “no use trying.”
Replace these with words and statements of empowerment:
- I CAN do it
- I have what it takes to succeed
- This will work better than I expected
Don’t let tradition paralyze your mind.
- Be receptive to new ideas.
- Be experimental.
- Try new approaches.
- Take on a change-maker mentality.
Ask yourself daily, “How can I do better?” Personal development is a lifelong journey. When you regularly ask yourself, “How can I do better?” you set in motion finding the answers. Don’t stop until you find them!
Practice asking good questions and actively listening. Ask quality questions from a diversity of people with a wide range of knowledge, people smarter than you, to achieve a wealth of information.
After asking, intently listen to the answers. People want to share their wisdom – listen and learn from them. According to Schwartz, it’s where you’ll obtain raw material for making sound decisions.
Stretch your mind. Get stimulated. Associate with people who can help you think of new ideas, consider new ways of doing things and engage in new ways of thinking. Mix with people who have a diversity of professions, education, interests and hobbies. Change it up to experience life from a new, fresh and diverse perspective.
It’s time to dream bigger.
Make a bigger impact.
Share yourself in expansive ways.
Keep growing as a person and stretch your abilities.
Imagine the possibilities!
