What Does It Really Mean to Build Resilience in Life?
To build resilience in life means strengthening your ability to stay grounded, adapt to change, and meet challenges with clarity and courage. It’s about remaining centered when life feels uncertain and finding strength in what you’ve learned along the way.
Resilience helps you navigate challenges with confidence, grace, and emotional steadiness so you can continue moving forward, even when life takes an unexpected turn.
“Every challenge holds an invitation to grow stronger, wiser, and more grounded in your truth. That’s the essence of resilience.”
— Coach Joan Jakel
How Life Reminds Us to Practice What We Teach
I was recently reminded of that old saying: “When we make plans, the Universe laughs.”
I had just opened up The Resilience Roadmap (now upgraded to the Inner Alchemy Program) digital coaching program, inviting people into a month of building resilience, and then life handed me a front-row seat to practice everything I was teaching.
Meet my cat, Pepper Cat (or PC, as I call her). She was a feral cat I slowly befriended on my nightly walks during Covid. After months of testing me out, she finally decided to adopt me. Since then, she’s been my constant companion and even my co-pilot on cross-country adventures.
For years, Pepper Cat needed daily medication for glaucoma. A few weeks ago, her condition worsened, and surgery became necessary. She needed to have her eye removed.
As I was guiding clients through their own growth journeys using the tools from The Resilience Roadmap, I found myself using the same tools to stay centered through my own experience.
The Tools That Help You Stay Grounded When Life Tests You
What carried me through that emotional and challenging time were the same resilience tools I teach in my program. When I felt overwhelmed, I turned to these simple but powerful practices:
-
Pause to breathe. I took five slow, steady breaths to let my nervous system reset, with long, slower exhales.
-
Reframe the moment. I shifted from “this is hard” to “this is an opportunity to learn” and focused on solutions instead of spiraling.
-
Lean on your support system. I asked for and received help, which became an act of strength, not weakness.
-
Practice gratitude. I named and acknowledged every small kindness as a reminder that I was supported along the way.
These practices, and so many more from The Resilience Roadmap, reminded me that resilience is built one intentional choice at a time and carried me through a very tough and emotional month.
Why a Strong Support System Builds Resilience
Resilience thrives in connection. It grows stronger when we allow ourselves to be supported by others.
My extraordinary support system wrapped me and Pepper Cat in love and care. Friends and clients sent poems, notes, and even “Super Cat” capes to cheer us on.
My veterinarian team showed exceptional compassion with handwritten cards, heart-decorated cones, and check-in calls that made every difference.
Surrounding yourself with excellence and genuine care in your relationships, partnerships, and teams gives you the stability to handle anything life presents.
When you allow others to show up for you, you expand your capacity for strength, compassion, and grace.
How to Build Resilience in Your Daily Life
Building resilience is a lifelong practice. Here are a few ways to begin cultivating it every day:
-
Create a strong support system. Build relationships with people who uplift, encourage, and support you.
-
Let others help you. Allow people who care about you to help you. Receiving support deepens connection and builds trust.
- Learn to Reframe Challenges. Shift your perspective from looking at the problem to focusing on a solution. That shift will provide creative solutions and opportunities for resolution.⇒Learn more in my blog post Learn How to Build Resilience When You’re Drowning in Stress.
-
Prioritize Self-Care. Take care of your body, mind and spirit so you have the energy, health and capacity to take care of yourself and others.

-
Set Healthy Boundaries. Boundaries are personal guardrails to maintain inner balance and well-being.
⇒Learn how to effectively create them in my blog post Mastering Boundaries for a Harmonious Life
Life will always offer opportunities for growth. Resilience helps you meet them with steadiness, self-trust, and grace.
Reflection Prompts
Take a few moments to reflect on the following:
-
Where have I recently demonstrated resilience, even in small ways?
- How could I add some self-care practices to my life?
-
Who in my life forms part of my support system, and how can I nurture those connections?
-
How can I prepare now by practicing my resilience tools before life asks me to use them?
Final Thoughts on Building Resilience in Life
Resilience is a daily practice of choosing calm, connection, and courage. Each challenge we face becomes an invitation to expand our strength and return to balance with more wisdom and grace than before.
When you cultivate resilience, you empower yourself to move through change with confidence and clarity. You create a life rooted in intention, trust, and strength.
If you’re ready to build your own foundation of resilience, I invite you to explore The Resilience Roadmap — the same program and tools that supported me through this experience and have guided countless others to stay grounded, confident, and strong. Inside, you’ll find training videos, audios and a workbook teaching you the same tools I used and so many more (including how to create an empowerment kit)!
