Post-election emotions have sparked a wave of raw, edgy, and sometimes overwhelming feelings in many people. In the wake of these emotions, individuals are wrestling with deep differences, ideological clashes, and the uncertainties of a shifting political landscape. This mix of fear and excitement is enough to leave anyone asking: How do I make sense of this? How do I move forward?
Today, I want to share some tips to help you process your feelings, regain a sense of peace, and navigate these times with resilience and compassion—for yourself and others.
Fully Feel Your Feelings
Give yourself permission to experience everything you’re feeling—sadness, anger, disbelief, frustration, relief, or even hope. These emotions are valid, and honoring them without judgment is essential to your emotional well-being.
Avoid the temptation to push your emotions away or pretend they don’t exist. Suppressed feelings often resurface with greater intensity. Instead, lean into what you’re experiencing. Taking time to connect with your emotions can help you process them more effectively.
Here are some ways to connect with and honor your post-election emotions:
Write it out
Journal your feelings in a notebook, even if your thoughts feel messy or contradictory. Let the words flow until you feel complete.
Name your post-election emotions
Saying things like, “I feel frustrated and confused,” or, “I feel angry,” can reduce the intensity of emotions and give you a sense of control.
Hold space for yourself
Treat yourself as you would a close friend. Acknowledge that your feelings are valid and give yourself the care and attention you need.
Process Your Post-Election Emotions with Movement and Reflection
Once you’ve acknowledged your emotions, it’s important to process them in ways that help you feel grounded. Here are a few actionable ideas:
Move Your Body
Physical activity is a natural way to release tension and shift emotional energy. Some options include:
-
- Taking a brisk walk or run
- Dancing to your favorite music
- Practicing yoga or stretching
- Doing a cardio workout or hitting the gym
Talk it Out
Sharing your emotions can bring clarity and relief. Consider:
-
- Talking to a trusted friend, family member, or coach
- Writing a letter to yourself or someone else—whether you send it or not
- Joining a supportive community or online group with healthy, productive discussions
Reminder: If you go online or join groups, avoid scrolling through negativity or hate-filled content. Stay away from conversations that dwell on discord, division, or anger. Instead, seek spaces that encourage understanding, healing, and growth.
Self-Soothe
Create moments of calm and connection by trying:
-
- Deep breathing exercises: Inhale for four counts, hold for four, exhale for six
- Meditation or mindfulness: Use guided meditations if you’re new to it
- Cuddling with a pet: Animals provide comfort and grounding
- Spending time in nature: Walk in the woods, sit by water, or simply observe the sky
- Engaging your senses: Light a candle, sip a comforting tea, or listen to soothing music

Take Positive Action to Create Change
When emotions feel overwhelming, small positive steps can help you regain your sense of empowerment. Here’s how:
Align Actions with Your Values:
Find ways to channel your energy into meaningful activities, such as:
-
- Volunteering for a cause you care about
- Writing or sharing about a topic that matters to you
- Supporting your community through small acts of kindness
Practice Gratitude
Gratitude is a simple but powerful emotional shift. Try these:
-
- Write a thank-you note to someone who’s impacted your life
- Call or message a loved one to share your appreciation
- Compliment someone or acknowledge their effort—it can make their day
Show Yourself Compassion
Here’s a final reminder: It’s okay to feel what you’re feeling. Allow yourself grace as you navigate these emotions. By processing them with care and taking intentional steps, you’ll create space for healing, hope, and meaningful connections.
With love and grace,
Joan
