What Makes the Winter Solstice So Special?
The Winter Solstice marks the longest night of the year and the turning point when the light begins to return. Across cultures and centuries, this day has always held deep meaning. For me, it’s a sacred checkpoint: an invitation to pause, reflect, and gently close the chapter on the year that’s ending.
My Solstice Reflection Ritual: From Integration to Embodiment
Last year, a dear friend invited me to a Solstice ceremony that included meditation and reflection followed by a labyrinth walk. As part of the ceremony, I chose a word, wrote it on a stone, and contemplated its meaning as I walked the labyrinth.
My word was: Integration.
After several years of deep healing work, I was ready to integrate everything I’d learned. With pure optimism, I thought the integration process would unfold quickly. Instead, it moved at its own pace.
It took the entire year!
This month, as the Solstice approached, I finally felt the completion. A sense of calm, confident certainty settled in. I returned my stone to nature and honored the journey.
This year, I’m choosing a new word:
Embodiment
Not just thinking about who I’m becoming.
No longer processing it.
Finally Living it!
This year, I’ll be at a different labyrinth, but the intention is the same: to honor the path, and to step into a new season, fully present with intentions for its unfolding.
Solstice Reflection: How to Close Out the Year and Begin Again
The Solstice offers all of us a powerful chance to reflect and set intentions.
Here are a few questions to guide your Solstice (or year-end) reflection:
- What have you learned this year?
- Who have you become?
- What are you ready to release?
- What do you want to reclaim or renew?
- What qualities do you want to embody in the year ahead?
Take a few quiet moments to journal, walk, or simply be with these questions. I have learned a powerful part of moving forward in life is honoring what has been. When we reflect and resolve, we create intentional endings that allow us to clear the space for what we choose to create moving forward.
It creates fertile space for fresh beginnings.
“The Solstice invites us to pause, reflect, and honor what we’ve learned because intentional endings are the first step to an empowered new beginning.”

A Gift to Support Your New Year: A Reflection & Planning Workbook
Every year, I create a new workbook to help my clients, and myself, reflect on the year that’s closing and design the year ahead with thoughtful intention.
This year’s guide, “A Year Unfolding,” is all about:
- Getting clear on what matters most to you
- Defining the experiences and direction that feel true to you
- Embodying the qualities and energy you want to live
- Designing a life that fits you, not a set of external goals
You can use it for Solstice reflection, New Year planning, or any moment you’re ready for a fresh start.
